Physiotherapy Program at Unicauca: Connecting Lives, Promoting Health Care

La Universidad -

Ninth-semester Physiotherapy students and faculty carried out a cardiovascular health and community outreach event at the Villa Carolina Protection Center in Timbío.

On Wednesday, May 21st, at the Villa Carolina Protection Center, located in the municipality of Timbío (Cauca), the cardiovascular health and social outreach event “Connecting Lives, Promoting Health Care” was held. This activity was led by ninth-semester students from the Physiotherapy program at the University of Cauca who are currently taking the course Practicum in Cardiopulmonary Physiotherapy and Critical Care, along with professors from the cardiopulmonary physiotherapy area.

The objective of the event was to promote healthy aging in the elderly population through educational strategies focused on encouraging lifestyle habits that contribute to overall well-being.

Additionally, the event allowed future physiotherapists to strengthen their clinical and social skills from a humanistic and community-based perspective, aligned with the principles of university social responsibility.

From the Department of Physiotherapy at the University of Cauca, we recognize the importance of these types of events as they support the fulfillment of our institutional mission, strengthen our university’s presence across the department, and generate a direct impact on communities that require special attention.

In particular, institutionalized elderly individuals represent one of the most vulnerable groups, as they face not only the aging process but also conditions of frailty associated with a weak family and social support network.

Therefore, it becomes even more necessary to create effective opportunities for access to health care, accompanied by professional attention and spaces for human interaction that not only address physical needs, but also provide moments of closeness, active listening, and companionship positively contributing to their emotional well-being and overall quality of life.

This initiative aligns with the guidelines of Colombia’s National Public Policy on Aging and Old Age 2022–2031, as well as the goals of the Decade of Healthy Ageing 2021–2030 promoted by the World Health Organization. From academia, we reaffirm our commitment to the comprehensive training of health professionals and the well-being of the most vulnerable populations in the Cauca region.
