Physiotherapy Program strengthens the relationship between academia and the productive sector with a health promotion day in workplace settings
Physiotherapy students at the University of Cauca carried out a health promotion initiative focused on spinal care in work environments, reinforcing the University’s commitment to contextualized and socially responsible professional training.
As part of the closing activities of the rotation “Physiotherapy and Work in the Formal Productive Sector,” fifth-semester students from the Physiotherapy program at the University of Cauca conducted a significant intervention at the company Metrex S.A., located in the city of Popayán. This activity took place under the guidance of Professor Tatiana González Rojas and within the framework of the pedagogical strategy “Back School,” aimed at promoting spinal health in workplace settings.
The event was designed and carried out by the students as part of their training practicum, in collaboration with the company’s Occupational Health and Safety department. “The central focus of the activity was education on musculoskeletal health, especially directed at production line workers, who are exposed daily to biomechanical risks such as repetitive movements, prolonged postures, and load handling,” explained Professor Tatiana González Rojas.

With the continuous support and guidance of the professor, students developed a comprehensive intervention using various pedagogical resources. Among the most notable were anatomical models of the spinal column, which facilitated visual and didactic explanations of its structure, function, and vulnerability under physical demands. Additionally, students presented educational videos they had produced, addressing key topics such as postural hygiene, identification of risk factors, active breaks, and ergonomic recommendations tailored to the industrial environment.
“One of the most valued components of the day was the physical exercise routine aimed at strengthening the core muscles, those that provide support and stability to the spine. These practical sessions were led by the students, who taught workers how to correctly perform each exercise and explained their importance in preventing occupational injuries,” the professor added.

The event concluded with a relaxation session featuring conscious breathing techniques and guided meditations. This component was designed not only to reduce muscle tension accumulated during the workday but also to promote emotional well-being, supporting a holistic approach to workplace health.
This formative experience, combining intervention, education, and health promotion, not only strengthens the clinical and educational competencies of future physiotherapists but also contributes meaningfully to the well-being of labor communities in the region. It also underscores the University of Cauca’s commitment to socially responsible and context-sensitive professional training.

“The intervention at Metrex S.A. reaffirms the transformative potential of collaboration between academia and the productive sector, enabling scientific knowledge and professional practice to be translated into concrete actions that positively impact workers' health and the sustainability of workplace environments,” concluded the professors from the Physiotherapy Program at the University of Cauca.
