Graduate Specialization in Structural Engineering

The Structural Engineering develops models to each of the complementary disciplines, such as hydraulics, foundation works, containment works, road works and so on.

This discipline covers solutions to many structural problems related to buildings, bridges, prefabricated systems, choice of building materials and methods not only for the general user but also for the specialized ones.  It takes into account specific areas and requirements such as building standards for earthquake-resistant construction and building codes for works that are relevant for the progress of the nation and the welfare of the society.

The purpose of the Code is to give the Engineer elements to ensure a safe, durable, resistant and cost effective design.  It is known that one of the key factors of our society is housing.  Colombia is a seismically active country and has a large seismic risk due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, for that reason the engineers have to add earthquake -resistant variables to their designs and buildings.

Since the country has suffered so many natural disasters, the Colombian government has issued mandatory laws and decrees related to earthquake –resistant building to protect and safeguard lives and cultural heritage.  Because Bridges are so important for the economic and social development of the country, there are earthquake -resistant codes and laws that apply to building them as well.

The Graduate Specialization in Structure Engineering is a program that complements other disciplines of the Civil Engineering and contributes to the society and the region development.
